Weight and medication

Postby katykat » Sat May 02, 2009 1:59 pm

Hi
I hope this is in the right place. I am new here and I wanted to ask for help with weight issues arising from new medication.Ten years ago my weight had gone from 8 1/2 stones to almost 11 stones (I am only 5'3") due to a lot of stress in my life. I joined Weight Watchers and got to a goal weight of 9 stones. I struggled to maintain the weight and gradually, following cancer treatment, it crept up again to over 10 stones.

This time I used Slimfast and got right down again and I was really pleased - except that my weight just carried on falling to almost 8 stones. I began to feel very tired and unwell and had a lot of pains in my bones and arthritis in my hands and neck. I also was concerned about numbness and tingling in many places. An MRI scan showed cervical spinal stenosis present at many levels and the neuro surgeon said he couldn't help me.

All he could do was to offer pain relief, specifically Lyrica (which is an anti epilectic drug that works on nerve endings)

It feels really good to be able to control my symptoms but a side effect is weight gain. I can feel all my clothes getting tight and I have lost control of my weight yet again. I can't function without the drug but the weight is depressing me now. There is no alternative pain relief and I already take diclofenac at full strength.

I just want to know the best way to limit the weight gain and maybe someone on this site can advise me? I would be very grateful for your ideas

Weight and medication

Weight gain and bloating is very common while on Paxil and it takes time to come off.

All you can do is eat properly, exercise, and be patient. But, if its something youre concerned, see your doctor.
