Follow these tips to stop tipping the scales
A fish called wonderful
If your lunch regularly smells like a night out in Grimsby, then you’ll soon be kissing goodbye to the lard. A team of smell-tolerant researchers from the University of South Australia studied several groups of overweight people and found that those who took daily fish oils in conjunction with regular exercise succeeded in losing considerably more weight than other control groups.
Skip the gym
Max Mosley isn’t the only man who works up a sweat when the rope comes out of the cupboard. According to the US National Institute of Health, skipping burns approximately 750 calories per hour – more than any other exercise except running. The faster you go, the more calories you burn – as Mr Mosley will no doubt confirm.
Break the sweat
Variety is the spice of a more slender life. A study published in the US journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that exercisers who broke 30 mins of cardio into three 10 minute sessions reduced fats in the blood considerably more than people who exercised continuously for 30 mins.
Record your biggest hits
Follow the lead of Adrian Mole if you want to drop the fat. In their 2008 survey of 1,685 overweight or obese adults, investigators at the Kaiser Permanente Centre for Health Research in the US found the most powerful predictor of a subject’s ability to lose weight was how many days per week they kept their food diary. “Focus on portion size especially,” says lead researcher Victor Stevens. “Practice at home and be aware that people tend to underestimate how much food they're served.”
